Chairman Douglas Hsu’s opening remark of “Water Exhibition”

The idea of “Taiwan Water, Fountain of Life” exhibition came up about seven years ago when I was having my morning jogging at a park in Tokyo, Japan.  The nearby museum was having “Water” exhibition, which was organized by the famous design master Taku Satoh.  Out of curiosity, I entered the museum to take a quick glance, yet spent nearly two hours highly amazed.  I was attracted by each and every design filled with knowledge about water resource, and learned about the severity of water shortage.  The impact remains and inspires me to hopefully bring this into Taiwan with such exquisite and sophisticated exhibition.  During spring of 2015, Taiwan suffered the worst water shortage crisis within the past 67 years, then super Typhoon Soudelor hit Taiwan resulting in flood and tap water cutoff, forcing people to reflect on the importance of water resource, therefore, we started instantly to prepare for this water exhibition.

From the models of display you can clearly understand that though with abundant rainfall, more than 80% of water cannot be retained in Taiwan.  In addition, with high water usage, serious tap water leakage, the total lost capacity is equivalent to 3 Shihmen Reservoirs each year, making Taiwan “the water-shortage nation with most rainfall”.  Hopefully with this vivid exhibition, people can be reminded the importance of water and further initiate their will and behavior to save water.  When taking a bath, shower is highly recommended.  Always remember to turn off the faucet if not using water.  All this contributes to save significant water for our land.

In fact, the consumer industries under the Far Eastern Group such as hotels and department stores, as well as polyester, chemical fibers manufacturing businesses consume a large quantity of water resource every day.  Therefore, we have been adopting equipment with water saving marks consistently to improve manufacturing process to lower water consumption, design and construct green buildings, save water, recycle and reuse water resource.  Protecting natural resources has been the Group’s main corporate social responsibility.  In the future, we will make more efforts to cherish the Island’s resources and dedicate our love to Taiwan.

“Taiwan Water Fountain of Life - Water Exhibition” is not only a joint effort among central and local governments, the media, research institute, and museum, but also coincides with the theme of “Water for Life Decade” initiated by the United Nations.  We sincerely welcome your visit to better understand this popular global issue, learn more about our life-dependent water knowledge.  Furthermore, the Far Eastern Group will issue high rewards and integrate its telecom, social responsibility, retail sectors to encourage participation and promote water preservation.  Any water-related action plan, invention, science project, and papers are welcomed to apply for the “FE Talks” to lead and inspire the wave of cherishing water throughout Taiwan.
