Chairman Douglas Hsu’s Remarks at 「The 15th Y. Z. Hsu Science Award Ceremony」

After 15 years of continuous efforts, Y. Z. Hsu Science Award has been recognized as Taiwan’s leading award in scientific research.  We are not only pleased that our commitment has helped promote the developments of technology in Taiwan, but also constantly think whether the present five categories: “Nano Science & Technology”, “Information and Communication Science & Technology”, "Optoelectronics Science & Technology”, “Biomedical Science & Technology” and “Green Science & Technology” are sufficient?  If we were to add the sixth category, what will it be?

I attended “Alibaba Taiwan Entrepreneurs Fund Forum” recently where the attendants discussed key technologies that will impact the future significantly, including AI (Artificial Intelligence), VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), 5G, and Big Data.  Take Big Data for example, when applied on medical care service, it can help predict the possibility of developing certain type of cancer based on genetic comparison, family illness history, and even the patient’s personal data to facilitate the prevention, tracking and treatment of illness.  When applied to business analysis, based on customers’ past habits we can predict future behaviors so as to provide personalized merchants and services.  Studying human behaviors with Big Data can also improve transportation management, and even prevent and analyze criminal act.  These are new opportunities brought by the technologies, and that is the reason why the Foundation has been dedicated to promoting technological innovation.
　　
From the discovery of electricity to the invention of light bulb, and then to the various applications and extensions of optoelectronics, these are the foot prints of human endeavors.  Nowadays the research and development of many new emerging technologies in Taiwan has only reached the stage of light bulb.  There are still more future applications to be developed, including the fiber material developed by Far Eastern New Century Corp. which can produce top-cool, top-dry, anti-microbial, and anti-odor fabrics to make comfortable wear during hot summer.  Given the short life span of modern clothing, more rapid bio-degeneration is environment-friendly.  Aside from providing comfort sportswear for athletes who care performance to the detail of every minute and second, the apparel should also enhance their speed.  Being the leader in the textile and polyester material sector, this shall also be FENC’s future objective.
