On October 1st, the winners of the 6th Digital Transformation Awards were announced. Far Eastern Memorial Hospital won two awards, including Dr. Chiu and Dean Kuanming's "AI Leader of the Year" award, and the "Oriental Petrochemical (Taiwan) Smart Sustainable Hospital Project" winning the "Digital and ESG Dual Axis Transformation Award" model award. From hospital level AI governance to clinical applications, and then extending to digital and ESG sustainable transformation, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital will drive medical innovation with technology and continue to create a smart and sustainable medical service model.Hospital level governance promotes AI transformation, using 'FRESH AIR' to outline the blueprint for smart healthcare
Faced with long-term challenges such as aging population, increasing medical demand, and healthcare workforce, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital has elevated its digital and AI transformation to the level of hospital level governance. Dr. Chiu and President Kuanming personally serve as Section Chief members of the Smart Healthcare Committee, promoting the integration of AI into healthcare and administrative work from strategy, resources, to risk management. Dr. Chiu, the Dean of Kuanming, stated that digital transformation is the responsibility of every colleague. The Dean's role is to make a commitment and lead the way, by setting direction, providing resources, and taking risks, establishing an environment that allows exploration, and enabling clinical and administrative colleagues to become drivers of innovation.
Far Eastern Memorial Hospital takes "FRESH AIR" as its blueprint for smart healthcare, promoting six major aspects including process reengineering, risk prediction, rapid and seamless development, smart infrastructure, home extension, and AI and robot applications, corresponding to the international healthcare five fold goal (Quintuple Aim). By 2025, the annual use of AI will reach 108359 times, with a success rate of 72.2%, demonstrating that AI has gradually integrated into daily medical and administrative work.
AI enters nursing daily shift record, reducing 30 minutes to 3 minutes
AI is not only used for medical research and decision-making, but also gradually entering daily nursing. Far Eastern Memorial Hospital will import generative AI into "GenAI Friendly Nursing Record (AI based Nursing Handover)" to assist nurses in reorganizing handover information, generating drafts, and then having them confirmed and reviewed by professionals, reducing repetitive textual reorganization work. After import, the writing time for a single handover record has been reduced from about 30 minutes to 3 minutes, which is estimated to save 7309 hours in clinical practice throughout the year, allowing nursing staff to devote more time to patient care.
While promoting AI applications, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital has also established data classification, lifecycle management, and usage standards, balancing innovation and medical safety. Dr. Chiu, Dean Kuanming, emphasized that all AI outputs are reviewed and approved by professional personnel, and the final medical responsibility is still borne by the medical team, providing a barrier for colleagues to innovate with peace of mind and making technology a divine teammate.
Far Eastern Memorial Hospital continues to expand the application of digital innovation in medical services, including deepening generative AI, FHIR international standard data exchange, digital therapy, and pharmacogenomics. It also integrates clinical practice with AI governance experience to bring digital technology closer to the needs of medical sites. At the same time, it actively aligns the hospital's practical experience with international standards, creating more value for patients and medical teams.
