Chairman Douglas Hsu’s Address at the 27th Founding Anniversary of Yuan Ze University

Facing with the drastically changing world, while not able to predict what happens next, we need to respond to changes and adjust accordingly.  Therefore, the Far Eastern Group has been assessing its overall operations and visions with the hope to enhance consensus and take actions proactively.  Aside from the decision to disengage non-profitable and no prospect businesses, dependence on technology and protection of data information safety have become very important issues with the ongoing growth of the Group’s scale.  Of course, Internet of Things (IoT) is the trend that cannot be ignored and modern enterprise must focus on customer satisfaction.  For instance of Far EasTone Telecommunications, if the call center takes too much time to process each incoming phone call, it will consume more manpower and increase operating cost.  But if only taking into consideration of the “time spent”, it may lead to less desirable service.  However, thanks to the progress of technology, we may rely on the analysis of Big Data to draw upon future strategy and achieve balance between cost control and customer relation.

Quick adjustment to adapt to business need is not only as important challenging as for the Group, but also equally more important for Yuan Ze and the overall academic institutions.  What kind of institute does Yuan Ze hope to become?  What kinds of students to teach?  And for what kind of talent Taiwan and the world would seek?  Those who are doing what is told?  Or those who can respond to changes, make constant adjustments, and keep innovative spirits?

Compared to national universities, Yuan Ze enjoys more flexibility, is able to make faster changes and innovation.  The School already used to lead in computerization when being established 27 years ago.  It will also become advanced in the digitalization through cooperation with Far EasTone Telecommunications.  In addition to the application of technology, bi-lingual lectures and even multi-language training is also Yuan Ze’s strength and future goal.  Furthermore, we should work on creating school culture, industrial-academic cooperation, as well as alumni connections.

Enterprises and institutes need to constantly move forward.  Individuals should also keep pace with time so that their mindsets can adapt to the new world.  Our neighboring nation Singapore though small, but given the government’s encouragement to expand overseas, it has achieved outstanding economic strength.  Yet, Taiwan has limited its own development because of populism.  Different mindset contributes to totally different economic developing curve.  Therefore, I would urge you to maintain these mindsets (aggressive, ambitious and accountability), constantly adjust in compliance with time and become the most desirable talent for modern enterprises.
