「说话」是一门艺术,温和委婉的沟通方式,能搭起友谊的桥樑、维繫良好的互动;相反的,太过尖锐的言词,不但伤害人际关系,也会带来负面影响。本期「英文小教室」要告诉您,如何运用优雅的词汇,让聊天不再卡卡!
在职场上,面对比较不如人意的状况时,应避免使用未经修饰、刺耳或粗鲁的语句,尤其要给予他人建议或批评时,若能透过正面积极的词汇,再搭配一个否定的修饰语,即可优化表达方式,让对方更愿意倾听。
Vocabulary (词汇)
(x)ugly- unpleasant or repulsive in appearance(丑陋的、令人厌恶)
(✓)not very attractive(较不吸引人)
(x)boring- tedious, dull, monotonous(无趣、乏味、单调的)
(✓)not particularly interesting(较不具吸引力的)
(x)confusing- difficult to understand, perplexing(艰涩难懂的)
(✓)not very clear(不够明确、不够清晰)
(x)a waste of time- useless or profitless activity(浪费时间)
(✓)not a good use of time(未能妥善利用时间)
句型:am/is/are/was/were + not + very +(positive adjective)
Examples(例句)
(x)This is a bad idea.
(✓)This is not a very good idea.
(x)The product is expensive.
(✓)The product is not very affordable.
(x)The facilities were dirty.
(✓)The facilities were not very clean.
Conversation(情境对话)
Steven:I'm disappointed in the location of our hotel. This is a really ugly part of Manila.(这间饭店的视野不好,放眼望去马尼拉的丑陋显露无遗。)
Hillary:I have to agree with you. This section of the city is not very attractive.(我也这么认为,这景色的确不够吸睛。)
Steven:I really liked the first speaker today, but that second presenter was boring. I couldn't understand his presentation; it was totally confusing.(我好喜欢今天的第一位演讲者,但第二位就枯燥无味极了,我完全听不懂。)
Hillary:You're right. His presentation was not particularly interesting, and it was also not very clear.(对,他的简报较不具吸引力,论述也没有很清晰。)
Steven:I really hope this conference doesn't turn out to be a waste of time.(我真不希望这次的商务会议变成在浪费时间。)
Hillary: We're missing three full days of work, so it would be a shame if this isn't a good use of our time.(我们整整耗费了三个工作天,如果未能妥善利用就太可惜了。)
