「說話」是一門藝術,溫和委婉的溝通方式,能搭起友誼的橋樑、維繫良好的互動;相反的,太過尖銳的言詞,不但傷害人際關係,也會帶來負面影響。本期「英文小教室」要告訴您,如何運用優雅的詞彙,讓聊天不再卡卡!
在職場上,面對比較不如人意的狀況時,應避免使用未經修飾、刺耳或粗魯的語句,尤其要給予他人建議或批評時,若能透過正面積極的詞彙,再搭配一個否定的修飾語,即可優化表達方式,讓對方更願意傾聽。
Vocabulary (詞彙)
(x)ugly- unpleasant or repulsive in appearance(醜陋的、令人厭惡)
(✓)not very attractive(較不吸引人)
(x)boring- tedious, dull, monotonous(無趣、乏味、單調的)
(✓)not particularly interesting(較不具吸引力的)
(x)confusing- difficult to understand, perplexing(艱澀難懂的)
(✓)not very clear(不夠明確、不夠清晰)
(x)a waste of time- useless or profitless activity(浪費時間)
(✓)not a good use of time(未能妥善利用時間)
句型:am/is/are/was/were + not + very +(positive adjective)
Examples(例句)
(x)This is a bad idea.
(✓)This is not a very good idea.
(x)The product is expensive.
(✓)The product is not very affordable.
(x)The facilities were dirty.
(✓)The facilities were not very clean.
Conversation(情境對話)
Steven:I'm disappointed in the location of our hotel. This is a really ugly part of Manila.(這間飯店的視野不好,放眼望去馬尼拉的醜陋顯露無遺。)
Hillary:I have to agree with you. This section of the city is not very attractive.(我也這麼認為,這景色的確不夠吸睛。)
Steven:I really liked the first speaker today, but that second presenter was boring. I couldn't understand his presentation; it was totally confusing.(我好喜歡今天的第一位演講者,但第二位就枯燥無味極了,我完全聽不懂。)
Hillary:You're right. His presentation was not particularly interesting, and it was also not very clear.(對,他的簡報較不具吸引力,論述也沒有很清晰。)
Steven:I really hope this conference doesn't turn out to be a waste of time.(我真不希望這次的商務會議變成在浪費時間。)
Hillary: We're missing three full days of work, so it would be a shame if this isn't a good use of our time.(我們整整耗費了三個工作天,如果未能妥善利用就太可惜了。)
