Learn the art of speaking to win good popularity for you

"Speaking" is an art. A gentle and euphemistic way of communication can build a bridge of friendship and maintain good interaction; On the contrary, too sharp words will not only hurt interpersonal relationships, but also bring negative effects. In this issue of "small English classroom", we want to tell you how to use elegant vocabulary to stop chatting!
In the workplace, when facing a less than satisfactory situation, you should avoid using unmodified, harsh or rude sentences, especially when giving advice or criticism to others. If you can combine positive words with a negative modifier, you can optimize the way of expression and make the other party more willing to listen.
Vocabulary (vocabulary)
(x) Ugly- unpleasant or repugnant in appearance
(✓) not very attractive
(x) Boring- tedious, dull, monotonous
(✓) not particularly interesting (less attractive)
(x) Conflicting- difficult to understand, perplexing
(✓) not very clear
(x) A waste of time- useless or profitable activity
(✓) not a good use of time
Sentence pattern: am/is/are/was/were + not + very + (positive addictive)
Examples (example sentence)
xThis is a bad idea.
✓This is not a very good idea.
xThe product is expensive.
✓The product is not very affordable.
xThe facilities were dirty.
✓The facilities were not very clean.
Conversation (situational dialogue)
StevenI'm disappointed in the location of our hotel. This is a really ugly part of Manila. (the view of this hotel is not good. Looking at Manila, the ugliness is exposed.)
HillaryI have to agree with you. This section of the city is not very attractive. (I think so, too. The scenery is really not eye-catching enough.)
StevenI really liked the first speaker today, but that second presenter was boring. I couldn't understand his presentation; it was totally confusing. (I really like the first speaker today, but the second one is so boring that I can't understand it at all.)
HillaryYou're right. His presentation was not particularly interesting, and it was also not very clear. (yes, his briefing is less attractive and his discussion is not very clear.)
StevenI really hope this conference doesn't turn out to be a waste of time. I really don't want this business meeting to become a waste of time
Hillary: We're missing three full days of work, so it would be a shame if this isn't a good use of our time. (we spent three working days, which would be a pity if we didn't make good use of it.)
