Far EasTone Telecommunication Was Authenticated by SBTi
Far EasTone Telecommunication / He Siwei
In response to the issue of global warming and environmental protection and low carbon, Far EasTone Telecommunication set medium- and long-term carbon reduction targets this year in accordance with the international standard-Science Based Targets (SBT), and submitted them to the most rigorous science-based Targets Initiative (SBTi) in June and was approved in July, becoming the third telecommunications technology company in Asia to obtain this international certification. The approval of the international recognition in such a short period demonstrates Far EasTone Telecommunication’s solid ability to manage carbon and its determination to reduce environmental impact. This is also a concrete manifestation of Far EasTone Telecommunication's concern for social and environmental sustainability.
SBTi was established by CDP, United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and other organizations. The scientific basis of SBTi's initiative is to achieve global control of global warming trend in the total carbon emissions within 2 degrees Celsius. Based on scientific methods and weight calculation, the reasonable emission (carbon reduction) quota of specific industries and companies can be calculated according to global carbon budget. On the basis of the information on SBTi website, 596 enterprises worldwide had submitted their carbon reduction plan commitments to SBTi, but only 39% of them got the approval, among which only 13 telecommunication enterprises in the world passed and only 4 enterprises were from Taiwan. This shows that energy and carbon management is a serious challenge for global enterprises.
Far EasTone Telecommunication President Chee Ching said that Far EasTone Telecommunication recognized that environmental management was the key to enterprise Sustainability Development. It responded positively to the United Nations SDGs and introduced management methods of international initiatives such as TCFD and SBT, etc. By making carbon reduction plan commitments according to SBT, "Category I" and "Category II" will be reduced by 20% in 2030 compared with 2016 for direct or indirect greenhouse gas emissions. For the third party through the value chain, the carbon emissions of Category III will be reduced by 17% in 2030 compared with 2016, which requires joint efforts with upstream and downstream value chains and is quite challenging for the telecommunications industry. However, Far EasTone Telecommunication combines Big Data+AI+IoT technology, actively explores various innovative application scenarios, and creates green energy ecosystems with partners, so it is brave to accept challenges and actively sets the "Category 3" reduction target which is even higher than Taiwan's counterparts, actively demonstrating the Far EasTone Telecommunication’s determination in energy-saving and carbon reduction and reducing the environmental impact.
Far EasTone Telecommunication is committed to promoting environmental sustainability. Through the Energy Management System (ISO50001) and the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), it continuously improves the efficiency of energy use, synchronously imports the Greenhouse Gas Inventory (ISO 14064-1), systematically manages the negative environmental impact of energy use, and finalizes the “Far EasTone Telecommunication Environment and Energy Policy” and “Greenhouse Gas Management Policy Statement”as Far EasTone Telecommunication's guidelines for managing various environmental impacts, they are expected to implement energy conservation and energy efficiency improvement at all stages of the telecommunications service life cycle and participate in climate change mitigation and adaptation. Every year, reduction measures of energy issues, greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water resources management are promoted. In 2018, Far EasTone Telecommunication was the only telecommunication company in the industry to win the Energy Conservation Benchmark Award of the Ministry of Economy. It was also awarded the Taipei Energy Conservation Leadership Award for reducing carbon emissions by 6,373 metric tons and electricity consumption by 35.4 million degrees, which fully demonstrated Far EasTone Telecommunication's outstanding performance in the field of environmental sustainability.
