Release of Preliminary Results of "Far Eastern Architectural Award-old house renovation Special Award" in 2019

        A preliminary review meeting of the "2019 Far Eastern Architectural Award-old house renovation Special Award" was held at Taipei Metro on August 10, 2019, and five shortlisted candidates were announced, namely, Chen Guanhua's "Chishang Barn Art Gallery ", Chen Yujin and Yang Jiakai's “Taichung Cultural Creativity Park R04 exhibition hall”. Lai Renshuo and Wu Jianzhi's “Workstation JK”, Wang Mingxian's “Honggen Yazhu” and Shen Tingzeng's “Reconstruction Case of the Building B of Shih Chien University”.

        Far Eastern Architectural Award, in addition to continuing to advocate breakthroughs and innovations in architecture, is holding the third "old house renovation special Award" in order to care for the inheritance and activation of architectural culture, and advocate Sustainability Development of local environment by caring for the regeneration of old buildings. Two-stage evaluation will select a "first prize" and a "best work award" with a bonus of NT$500,000 and 300,000 respectively. For the owners of the first prize and the best work award, one "owner award" will be awarded, and other finalists will be awarded a "selected prize" certificate.

        In the primary stage, Vice-Chief of Government Administration of Ministry of Education, Fan Sunlu was the chairman. Liu Xinrong (full-time professor of Department of Architecture of Tamkang University), Huang Huimei, the winner of "first prize" at the second Far Eastern Architectural Award (Large Scale Architectural Design + Design Director of Guo Xuyuan Architecture Firm), Wang Wenqi (professor of R&D Center of Tainan National University of The Arts), Zhu Ruiji (full-time associate professor of Department of Architecture of Ming Chuan University), Wang Weizhou (professor of Department of Architecture of National Taipei University of Technology) and Rong Fangjie (professor of Department of Environment and Cultural Resources of National Tsing Hua University) and other scholars and practitioners who are engaged in design, accounting and historical architecture were invited to be the judges.

        After three hours of discussion and three rounds of secret ballots, five works were selected for the final election. Zhu Ruiji, full-time associate professor of Department of Architecture of Ming Chuan University, said that the number of official and folk cases in the works was fairly average and many well-known works were included.  "Workstation JK" and "Hong Gen YaZhu" are both in the depressed old urban areas, trying to carry out not only a damaged repair, but also a rebirth experiment; architects start from "old houses" and light up the value of community life; through appropriate business methods, both cases attempt to guide the community residents to be concerned about the environment and the sustainability of life together. Chishang Barn Art Gallery is an old private barn which is over 6 decades. Its rebirth lies in sincerely facing the present and future of the transformation of Chishang Town. The designer's "slight reconstruction" provides residents and tourists with close expectations at any time. “Reconstruction Case of the Building B of Shih Chien University” is a seemingly unmarked renovation project. Architects use subtraction as a renovation strategy to accurately provide the functional needs of users through clear materials and construction techniques, but it also subtly evokes the memory of the past. “Taichung Cultural Creativity Park R04 exhibition hall” is the only public building renovation project in the short-listed works; the translucent and huge volume put in by the architect brings out a mysterious sense of time and space interlacing; its broken and scattered walls and shadows, poetically shows life and death, ruins and rebirth.

        The "Far Eastern Architectural Award-old house renovation Special Award " is scheduled to conduct a final field survey in early September. It will launch the Internet Popularity Award in the near future with rich prizes.
