Taiwan's Scientific Research Elites were praised at the Seventeenth Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award Ceremony

"The 17th Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award Ceremony" was held at Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei on August 22. Xie Dabin, Vice-minister of Ministry of Science and Technology, was invited to attend the ceremony with representatives of headman from various academic institutions and relatives and friends of the winners. Douglas Hsu, Chairman of the foundation, also attended the ceremony in person to share the joy with the winners. During the meeting, academician Kong Xiangzhong, principal of Taiwan Artificial Intelligence School, delivered a special speech on the theme of "Deep learning Inference Everywhere".
Yu-Ziang Hsu Foundation is established by Far Eastern Group affiliated enterprises, Xu's family and friends in memory of the late founder, Mr. Yu-Ziang Hsu. The Foundation emphasizes that the public welfare resources in China are mostly in social welfare or cultural education. Yu-Ziang Hsu Foundation is one of the few non-governmental foundations in Taiwan that encourages scientific and technological innovation. "Y.Z. Hsu Scientific Award" hopes to encourage Taiwanese scientists and technicians who are working hard in their research so that their achievements and contributions can be concerned and recognized by all walks of life, and it also makes the family members who have long-term support behind them glorious. Douglas Hsu believes that today is a highly competitive era, and science and technology play a key role. Faced with the development trend of new technologies such as 5G, AI and cloud technology, Taiwan needs all walks of life to support the development of basic science and reserve future competitiveness for Taiwan.
"Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award" marked 17th its session this year and is one of Taiwan's most important annual scientific awards. Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award continues to focus on the five emerging science and technology fields of "nanotechnology", "information technology", "optoelectronic technology", "biotechnology and medicine" and "green technology" in order to respond to the current research trends and expect to stimulate more innovative momentum. Since the establishment of this award, 357 awards have been awarded with a total bonus of nearly NT$150 million, which yields outstanding results.
There are four awards in “The 17th Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award Ceremony”, including “Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Chair Professor”,” Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Paper Award”,” Y. Z. Hsu Yuan-Ze Chair Professor” and “Y. Z. Hsu Outstanding Professor Award” with 21 winners altogether. Each winner of “Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Chair Professor”will receive a bonus of NT$1 million. Four winners were Professor Guo Guangyu of National Taiwan University (nanotechnology), Professor Lin Zhiren of National Taiwan University (information technology), Professor Lin Gongru of National Taiwan University (optoelectronic technology), andProfessor Liu Ruxi of National Taiwan University (green technology). All of them have won unanimous recognition from the committee for their achievements in the academic field over the years.
The winners of Y. Z. Hsu Scientific Award came from various universities and research institutions in China, including National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University, National Chiao Tung University, National Cheng Kung University, National Taipei University of Technology, National Yang-Ming University, National Ilan University and Central Research Institute, etc, which shows that Taiwan's scientific and technological research level is stepping up.
Chung Laung Liu, academician of Academia Sinica, is the chairman of committee. Academician Chen Lijun is responsible for the review of nanotechnology, Academician Li Linshan is responsible for the review of information technology, Academician Zheng Jianhong is responsible for the review of Optoelectronics technology, and Academician Wu Yanhua is responsible for the review of biotechnology and medicine. Jiang Benji, specially-appointed professor of Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering National Taiwan University, is responsible for the review of green technology. There are a large number of applications in this session, and up to 250 scholars and experts have participated in peer review. After three stages of review, the list of winners of this session has been decided, and each winner deserves to be honored.
At the end of the ceremony, the Foundation invited members of the Taiwan Team who participated in the 32nd International Youth Physicists Debate Tournament last month to accept praise. They are senior high school students from different schools in Taiwan, including Karen Wang from Taipei American School, Tian Yucheng from Taipei Municipal Chien-Kuo Senior High School and Deng Weiming from Tainan First Senior High School, Sun Jiaxi and Huang Yuting from Concordia Middle School. They have been training continuously since they participated in the domestic competition in March. The international competition was held in Warsaw, Poland. This year, Taiwan team won the bronze medal of the group in the fierce competition with 34 national teams. Taiwan's team has repeatedly won medals in international competitions, which shows that Taiwan's scientific education has laid a solid foundation. In the future, the Yu-Ziang Hsu Foundation hopes to lead younger generations go abroad and connect with the world.
