01.2021 Story
Unforgettable first aid event
Oriental Petrochemical (Shanghai) Corporation / Shao Qing
September 1, 2020 is an extraordinary day for me. The first rescue event in my life occurred on that day. Looking back at this moment, my heart is still stirring
As her 95 year old grandmother died of illness, she chose to hold a funeral on September 1 at her home in the countryside of Nanhui, Shanghai. According to the custom, a banquet was held at the same time to entertain relatives and friends who came to mourn. In the evening, everyone came home after dinner. Because it was a happy funeral, there was a table of guests who were still drinking and chatting. My family and I began to clean up the venue. Unexpectedly, when I passed the table, I suddenly heard a "Er" sound. I turned my head and saw an old man with his hands covering his chest. His body seemed to suddenly lose support and slowly collapsed to his wife. His wife was at a loss. She struggled to help him. She shouted in horror, "what's wrong? What's wrong? Help! Help!"
Everyone was shocked by this scene. Except for the cry for help, the scene was silent. Fortunately, the cry made me think again. I rushed forward and held the old man with his wife. I put my hand in front of his nostrils, but I didn't notice the breath. I put my hand on his heart again, but I couldn't feel the heartbeat. So I quickly shouted to the people in a daze: "hit 120! Help him out and let him lie on the ground." At this time, everyone responded. Some people hit 120, some shouted for a wet towel, and some looked for a blanket. With the help of relatives, they helped the unconscious old man out and let him lie flat. Looking at the old man who didn't respond, I thought, this place is remote. I'm afraid 120 will take half an hour to get there. He may not be able to support it!
Suddenly, I remembered that the company had arranged a training course for first aiders. The teacher said that when people suddenly had no breathing or heartbeat, they must immediately undergo cardiopulmonary resuscitation. I quickly recalled the operation in the class in my mind, and took a deep breath to calm myself down. I turned to his wife and said, "Auntie, I have been trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the unit. Will you allow me to rescue him?" There was a trace of hesitation on her anxious face. A relative nearby hurriedly advised: "elder sister, you can let my brother save my elder brother! This can't be delayed! I said on TV that if the coma lasts for a long time, people will be in danger!" Upon hearing this, the aunt's face became firm: "brother, please help me! If anything happens, I don't blame you!"
So, I knelt down on the right shoulder of the old man, untied his coat, first opened his mouth, confirmed that there was no foreign matter inside, held his forehead back, opened his airway, and then found the heart position at the midpoint of the nipple line on both sides of him, overlapped his hands, and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. I do it alternately every 15 chest compressions and 2 artificial breaths. As this is the first actual operation, I feel very nervous and my mind is blank. I have no time to think about anything. After about 3 minutes, the old man gradually had a heartbeat and breathed, and his mind slowly recovered. "Uncle, you're awake! Can you hear me?" I said aloud to him. The old man still looked dizzy, but he nodded at me. I was relieved.
After 20 minutes, the ambulance arrived, and everyone helped him get on the bus. My aunt held my hand and said with tears in her eyes, "thank you, brother. Without you, I really don't know what would happen today...."
I wiped the sweat on my face. Although I had lingering palpitations, I was glad that the company had arranged the training of first aiders, which allowed me to save my life at the critical moment. Recalling that the company often organizes various kinds of trainings, which are not only to deal with abnormal situations in the unit, but also to help everyone cope with unexpected situations in daily life, so as to provide more safety protection for family property and family members' health. It is really worth cherishing and studying hard
