Yuan Ze University teamed up with Far Eastern Memorial Hospital to participate in the Artificial Intelligence Challenge and win the championship

        Professor Chen Dunyu, Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering and Communication at Yuan Ze University, led a team of laboratory members to join hands with a group of physicians from the Imaging Department of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital to participate in the "AOCR 2024 Acute appendicitis CT Image Identification Competition". They competed with research teams from well-known universities and hospitals both domestically and internationally, and stood out from nearly 200 participating teams with over 92% prediction accuracy, winning the championship. This not only demonstrated the team's strength in the field of medical image analysis, but also laid a solid foundation for the development and application of related technologies in the future.

        Acute abdominal syndrome refers to a disease characterized by severe acute abdominal pain that requires emergency treatment, accounting for approximately 7-10% of emergency room visits. Acute appendicitis is the largest case, and computed tomography (Abdominal CT) is the most commonly used diagnostic tool. Although many studies have been conducted, the related diagnosis remains challenging. If misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis occurs, it will increase the incidence of perforation, peritonitis, and complications of laparoscopic surgery, affecting sequelae and mortality. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis is crucial.

        However, the symptoms of acute appendicitis are often unclear and overlap with other diseases. Even if clinical physicians complete physical examinations and refer to blood test results, it is still difficult to accurately segment the inflamed appendix area from computed tomography (CT) images.

        Professor Chen Dunyu led a team to use computed tomography images, combined with two-dimensional and three-dimensional artificial intelligence image segmentation models, to distinguish whether it is acute appendicitis. The team of imaging physicians at Far Eastern Memorial Hospital also plays a key role, relying on their rich medical knowledge and experience to explain specific imaging situations, providing the correct direction for model design, development, and training, while participating in model validation and evaluation to ensure that they can correctly interpret and analyze images and meet medical standards. Through the integration of technology and medicine, we hope to provide medical professionals with faster and more accurate diagnostic tools to improve treatment outcomes.
