Far Eastern Group has operation for decades in Taiwan. Starting from the daily essential necessity industry in textile, gradually expanding into diversified businesses and be the industry leaders in these sectors that consist of food, clothing, residence, transportation, education, and recreation. The Group has also been dedicating to corporate social responsibilities and promoting various non-profit events, among which “Y. Z. Hsu Science Award” sponsored by the Far Eastern Y. Z. Hsu Science & Technology Memorial Foundation has already become the highest honor to recognize Taiwan’s scientific research talents.
Y. Z. Hsu Foundation Continues to Innovate Advancing with the Society Developments
Since 2002, Far Eastern Y. Z. Hsu Science & Technology Memorial Foundation has been sponsoring the annual “Y. Z. Hsu Science Award” with increasing applications and keen competition. After thorough reviews, award recipients are leaders in their respective categories, many grantees later became Academicians of Academic Sinica, demonstrating the importance of this Award in Taiwan’s scientific research arena. Chairman Douglas Hsu has expressed that “To sponsor an award is not only granting the award, the Foundation encourages a wide range of scopes, and requires a rigorous process so as to select the best candidates.” Y. Z. Hsu Science Award has long been covering areas including the invisible nano-grade study, telecom technology and optical electronics, medical technology, and environmental sustainability. This year, Artificial Intelligence (AI) was a new category that encourages more researchers engaging in the research of AI technology so as to help Taiwan seize opportunities during this wave of digital transformation.
Douglas Hsu has indicated that AI is an area worthy of focus and attention for Taiwan. “The whole world is studying AI, which can streamline the complex, repetitive, and tedious task, and make operating process more consistent.” For instance, in the retail industry, the application of AI can trace customers’ actions, shopping behavior, and thus analyze and predict the most optimal services to satisfy customer needs, while also increase retailers’ revenues, resulting in a win-win solution. Currently the Far Eastern Group has been proactively adopting AI technologies, applies it to diversified industries, the speed and depth of adopting AI is quite different, however, sensing device, data collection, intelligent analysis and prediction, innovative services are all the tasks that the Far Eastern Group must complete despite its challenges.
Y. Z. Hsu Science Award has been held for 18 years which receives wide recognition and appraisal, Y. Z. Hsu Science and Technology Memorial Foundation continues its efforts in helping with the society, “We must continue to improve, as the society is also progressing.” With this goal, “Y. Z. Hsu Science Award” has added a new category of “Y. Z. Hsu Technology Contribution Award” this year. Douglas Hsu states: “To maintain the existing awards is already a demanding task, yet, in order to break the existing boundary of single category so to fully encourage Taiwan talents, we have created this new award.” While facing the challenge of this global pandemic, under the cross-ministry coordination and leadership of Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), coupled with scientific statistics to properly stipulate a set of epidemic prevention policies, and lead the public to overcome this epidemic crisis, Taiwan’s remarkable performance has been recognized in the world. After formal reviews and selections, the Foundation is awarding its first “Y. Z. Hsu Technology Contribution Award” to the commander of CECC, Minister Chen Shih-chung of Health and Welfare to thank his outstanding contribution and excellent achievement.
Far Eastern Group No Absent from Epidemic Prevention Efforts
While Taiwan’s success in response to epidemic prevention is well received all over the world, the Far Eastern Group has also dedicated to offering technical assistance. During the early outbreak of the pandemic, Far Eastern Memorial Hospital stood on the frontline to safeguard people’s wellbeing and supported the quarantine system for entry at Taoyuan International Airport. Far Eastern New Century served as national mask production team to flexibly adjust its production line to produce fibers for medical-grade masks, sheet for productive masks, and medical gowns to protect the safety of health care workers. The Company has developed new micro fibers to replace the traditional melt blown cloth (the inner sheet of medical grade masks) to export to various countries in Europe and Australia in order to contribute to international epidemic prevention. However, Douglas Hsu pointed out that there is still room for improvement in mask production in terms of comfort, function and times of usage as well as its market potential, “Though a simple piece of mask, a lot of knowhow is involved, strives to continuously improve.” It pushes the Far Eastern New Century Corporation to continue to develop new anti-biotic, anti-virus, highly breathable specialty textile to contribute to the research and development of more convenient, more comfortable, and safer materials.
The World Changes Rapidly “CSR” Commitment Remains
2020 is a tumultuous year. Covid-19 has brought overwhelming impact to the national policies of many countries as well as their industrial deployments. While the pandemic will ultimately end one day, its impact has forever changed the world. “It’s over!” Douglas Hsu said held nothing back. The pandemic greatly enhanced people’s dependence of the internet, and will irrevocably change people’s lifestyle in all aspects. The rise of 5G technology indicates faster speed, wider range, and more choices of the network. Therefore, the Far Eastern Group is engaged in deploying its 5G market, continuously to support Taiwan’s consumers and enterprises, and create more opportunities across different needs.
Douglas Hsu has indicated that with the joint efforts of government, enterprises, and people, many industries are able to maintain their leading positions in the world. However, “It’s not enough, it could be better!” Taiwan would need to attract more international talents and also help expand Taiwan talents abroad. Through exchanges and learning, this would allow more advanced technologies be brought back into different fields in Taiwan. There are uncertainties filled in human life and international landscape, Far Eastern Group remains consistently to work together with Taiwan for a promising future through its commitment to “CSR” and “Innovation”.
